Border agents across the country called for ‘hands-on’ prosecution of migrants crossing southern border

Border Patrol agents on the U.S. northern and coastal borders are being asked to help their counterparts on the southern border by increasing virtual processing of migrants found after crossing illegally from Mexico, according to a memo from the in-house agency obtained exclusively by the Daily. Virtual processing involves agents in one sector meeting with illegal migrants on a video call in another sector to help relieve some of the pressure on federal authorities where the migrant is located, Border Patrol sources said in the DCNF. “We need northern/coastal sectors to ramp up their virtual processing support over the weekend,” the message read.

“In general, USBP [U.S. Border Patrol] did a good job managing custodial numbers throughout Thanksgiving week, however, custodial numbers are now up due to low average bookings compared to encounters,” the message read .

“At this time, all available personnel are needed to address the unprecedented influx,” Tucson Sector Chief Patrol Officer John Modlin tweeted Sunday afternoon. “The social media team will return when the situation permits.”

The Border Patrol has used virtual processing as a tool to address record flows of illegal immigration in recent years. The process, however, takes needed resources away from the nation’s northern and coastal borders, according to Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council. he said the DCNF.

“This domino effect all starts in the South West, but then the effects are felt everywhere because we have to use resources to deal with what’s happening in the South and when you do that, of course you leave yourself wide open in other areas , and that’s what we’re seeing up north right now,” Judd said in September 2022.

Border Patrol meetings exceeded 2.2 million in fiscal year 2022, followed by more than 2 million in fiscal year 2023 on the southern border.

Also, illegal immigration on the northern border he jumped from approximately 2,000 Border Patrol encounters in fiscal year 2022 to more than 10,000 in fiscal year 2023.
