US activates air defense systems across Middle East, citing ‘escalation’ by Iran and its proxies

The Pentagon is trying to increase its military readiness in the Middle East, ordering the activation of air defense systems “across the region” and alerting additional US forces that may be deployed soon.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says in a statement that the measures are a response to “recent escalations by Iran and its proxy forces throughout the Middle East.”

“These steps will strengthen regional deterrence efforts, increase the protection of US forces in the region and help Israel’s defense,” he says.

Austin did not specify how many additional US troops would be deployed to the region.

“I will continue to assess our force posture requirements in the region and will consider deploying additional capabilities as needed,” he says, adding that the moves follow “detailed discussions” with US President Joe Biden.

The announcement also comes after Austin spoke again with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant amid the ongoing war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas.

“The Secretary thanked Secretary Gallant for Israel’s role in facilitating the October 21 humanitarian convoy to Gaza and reiterated the importance of protecting civilians,” a Pentagon statement said. “The two leaders also discussed the continued provision of security assistance and the US commitment to deter any state or non-state actors seeking to escalate this war.”
